English fiction like Treasure Island and Peter Pan (and almost every Hollywood pirate move ever made), portrays pirates as more or less harmless rogues. Apparently they wore patches over one eye, hopped around on peg-legs, kept talking parrots as pets – and spent their time either searching for or trying to bury treasure.
But were pirates really like that?
According to this Cracked article, the answer is NO. In their opinion, real pirates were psychopathic mass murderers – who butchered and stole from often defenceless people.
